Remembering Berta… Berta Hawk was born May 12, 1924 in Mt. Lebanon, LA to Jeffrey Hawk and Ammie Allen Hawk. She was baptized at an early age at Springfield Baptist Church in Mt. Lebanon. She was also educated in Louisiana. On February 19, 1946 she married Charlie J. Allums, Sr in Minden, LA. To this union were born four children, Linda, Charlie, II, Debra and Felton. She was a member of First Union Baptist Church after moving to Teas. In 1956 she joined Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church after moving to Texas City. She was president of the Ruth Circle for many years. She was the President of the Mainland Chapter of the NAACP for 8 years. She was instrumental in the integration of LaMarque ISD. She was also a member of the Women Auxillary of ILA Local 1504 in Galveston. She organized the first Neighborhood Watch in South Acres Subdivision in Texas City. These are just a few things she did to better the community. In 2016, she became a member of Greater Barbours Chapel Baptist Church in Texas City because family members attended there. Berta Hawk Allums is preceded in death by her parents, ten brothers and three sisters, daughter, Debra K. Allums, Son, Felton W. Allums, grandchildren: Carlton, Charleston, and Christian Allums and her ex-husband, Charlie J. Allums, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Allums Hardeman, son, Charlie J. “Pop” Allums, II, (Teresa), a host of grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A special “Thank You” to her great-grandson, Jon L. Vaughn, Jr., who helped his grandmother take excellent care of his Big Mama.
