John Rogers Brown Sr., 69, died quietly at his home on Saturday, February 13, 2016 with his wife at his side. Born in Littleton, NC on April 20, 1946 to the late William and Irena Brown, he lived in Lakewood from the age of 4.
John graduated Lakewood High School in 1965 where he was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track. A proud Vietnam veteran, John served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969 and was honorably discharged and retired under special Presidential orders as a recipient of 3 Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.
John attended Ocean County College and graduated with his Associates Degree in Business in 1977 leading him to a job as a Senior Supervisor for the N.J. Dept. of Labor Veterans’ Representative where he retired after 25 years. He was inducted into the Lakewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame at its inception in 2005.
Surviving is his wife of 26 years, Linda; children: Thomas Bradley Sr. (Lynne), John Jr., Samara, and Eric Brown; 6 grandchildren; 3 great granddaughters; his twin brother, Joe; and sisters, Emily McMiller and Louellen Troy.
Visitation will be held at the Macedonia Baptist Church, 143 John St., Lakewood on Sunday, February 21, from 4-8 PM. Funeral Services will be held at Calvary Lighthouse, County Line Rd, Lakewood at 10 AM February 22. Interment will follow at the Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his wife, Linda Brown, to establish a memorial scholarship in John’s name for children of disabled veterans or veterans who died serving their country.
