He was born in Lakewood, NJ and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1955. Ed played varsity football and was a member of the 1955 state championship golf team, which was inducted into the Lakewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in the Teams of Distinction category. Ed went on to the University of Florida in Gainesville where he was a member of the Division 1 Gator Golf Team and was also a member of Pi Lamba Phi fraternity. He continued to play golf as a member of Eagle Oaks Golf Club until his death.
Ed’s business background was extensive. He owned and operated Peterson’s Sunset Cabin restaurant, was an account executive with the Wall Street firm McDonald and Company and was a founding member and director of WOBM radio station. At one time, he was also president of Lakewood Oil Company.
He was very active in the Lakewood community. Ed was the chairman of the first Lakewood Civil Rights Commission during the turbulent sixties and a member of the Kimball Medical Center Board of Trustees. He was active in youth athletics as a coach, umpire and referee. One of his greatest pleasures was working together with a friend and former NFL coach to help many local athletes obtain college scholarships—some of whom went on to play professional baseball and NFL football.
He was a tremendous communicator and could tell you a story that made you feel like you were there. He had a sharp wit, a great sense of humor, and was always ready to help others.
Ed lived a full life, but his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.
Ed is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Beverly, daughter Wendy Reizer of Manasquan, New Jersey, son John Levy and his wife Wendy Kalish of Scottsdale, Arizona, and his granddaughter Olivia Reizer of New York City.
Relatives and friends will be received at the D’Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ on Sunday February 19, 2023 from 2 pm until 2:30 pm. His memorial service will follow at 2:30 pm in the funeral home. Cemetery services will be private.
