Douglas M. Herzog, 67, of Toms River, NJ died Monday, August 3, 2015 after a long illness with pancreatic cancer. He passed peacefully in his home with his family by his side. Born August 20, 1947 in Bradford, PA he was a son of the late Robert L. and LaVerna Moore Herzog. On April 3, 1971, he married Eva Juhasz at St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River, NJ. He was a 1965 graduate of Smethport Area Jr.-Sr. High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Clarion University and earned his Master of Science in Education from Monmouth College. He worked seven years as a fourth grade and sixth grade teacher at Walnut Street and Toms River Elementary Schools before being promoted to Assistant Principal for the Toms River School District (Silver Bay and Hooper Avenue). In retirement, Mr. Herzog worked for the family trucking company, Appalachian Transport in Smethport, PA. Douglas volunteered for many years as a Boy Scout leader and was a communicant of St. Luke’s Church in Toms River. Mr. Herzog was known for is strong work ethic. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Eva; sons, Jason (Amy) Herzog of Tabernacle, NJ and Ryan (Brittney) of Smethport, PA; granddaughters Kierstyn and Alyson Herzog of Tabernacle, NJ; brothers Gary (Laura Burdick) Herzog and David (Sharon) Herzog of Smethport; two sisters, Cheryl (Lad) Juhasz of Richmond, KY, and Julia Herzog of Noblesville, IN; sisters-in-law, Arlean Juhasz of Herndon, VA and Kathy Herzog of Bradford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Stephen Herzog and Gregory Herzog; a nephew, Robert S. Herzog and stepmother, Connie Herzog. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday August 5th at D’Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. A second visitation, funeral mass at St. Elizabeth’s Church and committal services will be held in Smethport, PA at a later date. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research or a charity of the donor’s choice.
