Our beloved mother and grandmother, Sally Rose Maez, passed away on November 3, 2023, at her home in Lakewood, CO. 81 years of age at the time of her passing, Sally called the Denver area home since 1966 when she and husband Bernie moved their family from the San Luis Valley in pursuit of a better life for their children. She is survived by children Bernie Maez Jr. (Jeanette), Theresa Cardenas (Sergio), sister Gloria Hurtado, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Sally was born July 14, 1942, in El Rito, NM to Luciano and Leontina Esquibel (nee Lopez). She lived her formative years in El Rito before moving with her family to Center, CO in 1953. It was in Center where she met Bernie Maez, later marrying on November 22, 1958. Bernie and Sally had four children: Rosalie, Theresa (Tulie), Bernie Jr. and Benedict, eventually settling in Denver.
Sally will be remembered as the foundation of her family. Steady and stable, Sally was a source for comfort, love, knowledge, and tradition. She enjoyed cooking for loved ones and her food will forever be legendary amongst any who was fortunate enough to experience it. A pillar of stability, Sally was married to Bernie for 50 years prior to Bernie’s passing in 2009.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bernie, mother Leontina, father Luciano, sister Elivinia, brothers Manual and Junior, children Ben and Rosalie. Sally’s remembrance and celebration of life will take place at 11am on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at St. Cajetan's Catholic Church, 299 S Raleigh St, Denver, CO 80219. She will be laid to rest at 1:30pm at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 12801 W 44th Ave, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
