Van was born in Oberlin, Kansas to George M. Van Vleet and Hallie B. Liberknecht. He grew up on a farm in Allison, Kansas with his four brothers, Claude, Clarence, Forrest (Bill), Albert and his two sisters Norma Jennett and Ila Skinner.
He graduated from Oberlin High School in 1947. Van joined the United States Air Force on April 4, 1948. He spent most of his military career stationed at Wichita AFB in Wichita, KS and Mather AFB in Sacramento, CA. He was honorably discharged on March 3, 1952 as a Staff Sargent. After discharge he worked for a short time for International Harvester Co in Wichita, KS and then moved to Denver, CO to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Company.
During high school Van met Genevieve E. Mindrup. They were married on June 7, 1952. They started a family, complete with Connie M. and Ronald D. As a family they loved traveling and attending football games. Being a role model and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Van and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family.
Van was also a lodge member of the Westminster Elks.
In addition to his wife, Genevieve and children, Connie and Ron, Elmer is survived by his many nieces and nephew. He was preceded in passing by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4377 Utica St, Denver, CO 80212 on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 10:00am. There will be a reception following the service. His family will be present to welcome loved ones.
