Bennie L. Lucero, 71, of Denver, CO passed away on September 23, 2019. He was born in Fort Lupton, Colorado to Marcos Lucero and Elvira (Urioste) Rael. Ben was 1 of 12 children. He is survived by 6 sisters, Rosie (Ernie) Mares, Pat Durkee, Jean (Roy) Reed, Josie (Anton) Broker, Yolanda Lucero, Dolores Espinosa, and 2 brothers, Anthony Lucero and Tracy Rael. He is preceded by his loving parents, his step-father Rosendo Rael, his sisters, Ann Rodriguez, Stella Lopez, and brother Marcos Lucero, Jr. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Ben was a strong, loving and hardworking man. As a child, his family followed the crops as migrant farmworkers. They moved to Denver in 1952. Ben grew up in West Denver and graduated from Denver West High School. He was a proud “Westsider”.
He married Alicia (Alice) Avila in 1969 and they had 4 beautiful children, Joseph T. Gonzales Lucero (deceased), Nicole Lucero-Holub (Jeff), Leticia Benay (Lucero) Amparan (Alejandro), Alana Lucero Reyes (Bradlin). Ben was a doting and dedicated father. His daughters were his pride and joy. He had 10 grandchildren, Jordan, Roman and Dorian Holub; Jesse & Joseph (deceased), Arabella and Ariana Amparan; Ameliana, Nehemiah and Isaiah Reyes. Ben later met Gloria Lopez in 1998 and they got engaged in 2004. He was heartbroken when his beloved fiancé passed away later that year.
While Ben started working shining shoes and selling newspapers at the young age of 11, to help support his family, his lifelong career was as a journeyman carpenter by trade. He spent his career working in construction and installing module furniture. His work ethic and obsession to be on time for everything was to a fault. Ben loved his family and friends and they loved him. To many, Ben was a second father or uncle, or one they never had. Ben touched so many lives with his strength, contagious big smile, quick wit and sense of humor. He was filled with one-liners and stories making the time you spent with him treasured memories. Ben will be greatly missed.
