William Richard Hagen, 82, of Lakeway, Texas, retired IBM executive, retired CIO of Sleep America, and author, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024, at home, surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy of love, honor, humor, and self-sacrifice, as soon their broken hearts allow. William passed away of natural causes related to congestive heart failure.
William, known as “Bill,” was born February 17, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan to his parents, Percy Gudmundsen Hagen and Lucia Aline Hagen.
Bill graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri Rolla and had distinguished careers with IBM and Sleep America. He enjoyed golfing, spending time with family and friends, and Whataburger. He was fascinated with astronomy and loved the beauty of the sky and of the outdoors. Bill wrote five science fiction books during his retirement and had a unique sense of humor and an incredibly quick wit. He was downright hilarious!
William Richard Hagen answered to many names: Bill, Uncle Willy, Dad, Daddy, Papasan, Grampy, and, sometimes, Grumpy Grandpa or Bad Word Bill. He was not interested in political correctness, and it was impossible for him to be pretentious. He loved his country and his guns, and he was passionate about preserving the freedoms of the United States of America.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Donna, whom he married on November 7, 1976, and would have celebrated his 48th anniversary with “Saint Donna” this year; by his 4 children and their spouses: daughter Michelle Hagen & Paul Martin, daughter Eve & George Monaghan, son Gary & Pamela Hagen, daughter Janelle & Scott Washburn; by his 5 grandchildren: granddaughters Ciarra Morgan (and husband Kyle), Jensen Hagen, Heather Hagen, and Sarah Peterson, and grandson Nathan Arnold; by his 2 great-grandchildren: Aspen Morgan (14) and Anson Morgan (6); by his sister-in-law, Kim Hagen, and by loving friends Kate Bonds & family, Joe, Barbie, and Jake Marr, Sue Stajich, Derek Martin, Jessica & Carlos Paz, and his Whataburger clan, whom he visited every day.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, Percy and Aline Hagen, by his brother, Warren Hagen, and by his best friends: Richard Bonds, Johnny Lucidi, and Tom Wukovits.
