Virginia Ruth Gilbert Owen

Virginia Ruth Gilbert Owen passed into the next life on May 11, 2016 in Austin, Texas at the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 17 days. Among those welcoming her to her eternal home were her husband of 54 years, Douglas Owen, son Greg Owen, brother Buddy Gilbert, sisters Rita, Nancy, and Shirley, and parents Luther and Polly Gilbert. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Glenda Owen, of Austin Texas, and grandson Christopher Owen of San Antonio, Texas.

Mrs. Owen, a long-time resident of Roanoke, Virginia and WWII Cadet Nurse Alumni, practiced her profession as a Registered Nurse at both Lewis Gale hospital in Roanoke and at the Veterans Administration hospital in Salem, Virginia. She was born in Wilder, VA, and made her home in Roanoke for more than fifty years prior to moving to Austin last year to be closer to her remaining family.

She will be interred alongside her husband at the Glenwood Mausoleum in Bristol, Tennessee, and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 5th at Cave Springs United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Virginia, where she was a long-term and faithful member.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in her memory and in honor of the loving care she provided to her husband as he progressed through the seven stages of Alzheimer's.
