He was born April 7, 1939, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Hansena and Loren Larson, who raised him and his brother V.F. (Bud) in Fort Dodge, Iowa where he participated in a variety of activities at his church and high school, including football, basketball, track, band, orchestra, choir and student council. He attended Ft. Dodge Junior College for two years where he played football, then earned BBA and MBA degrees at the University of Iowa, and a PhD in accounting, finance and economics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Kermit married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Weber, in 1961 and together they built and shared a beautiful life, raising three children, Julie, Tim and Cindy and having seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom he adored.
Kermit deeply loved his family and friends and devoted much of his time and energy to those relationships. He equally enjoyed a good laugh and thoughtful debate and will be remembered by his family for his wise counsel, encouragement, generosity, and zest for life. He especially enjoyed attending the many activities of his Austin grandchildren, the extended visits from his German grandchildren, and taking annual ski trips to Colorado and Utah. He was also an avid sailor, first on Lake Travis and then later across the Gulf of Mexico and from Ft. Lauderdale through various parts of the Bahamas. He loved many years of camaraderie and golfing at Lost Creek Country Club. He was also a capable handyman and often donated those skills to his family and churches when needed.
Kermit was active in several churches, including First Presbyterian in Boulder, Highland Park Baptist in Austin, and Lake Hills Church in Bee Cave, Texas. He served in a variety of capacities, including Deacon and Church Moderator, but especially enjoyed his time caring for babies in the children’s wing at Lake Hills on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. In his last years, the friendships he gained through his Thursday morning men’s Bible study were a constant source of encouragement for Kermit to stay strong in his faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
Kermit dedicated much of his working life to teaching and writing. After teaching during graduate school, he joined The University of Texas faculty in 1966, where he taught for over thirty years in the nationally renowned Accounting Department, and authored several widely circulated textbooks, including Fundamental Accounting Principles which was used in hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. His professional life included service as Accounting Department Chair at UT, national Vice President of the American Accounting Association, chair of several AAA committees such as the Committee on Concepts and Standards, President of the Richard D. Irwin Foundation, and member of the Accounting Accreditation Committee and the Accounting Standards Committee of the AACSB. He also testified as an expert witness in a variety of complex litigation cases.
Kermit was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Cindy. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughter Julie Ehlers, his granddaughters Lauren and Lillien Ehlers, and his grandson Karl Ehlers; his son Tim Larson and wife Megan; grandsons Colton and Luke Larson, granddaughter Mary Lynne Larson and granddaughter Claire Johnson and her husband Cade Johnson and his first great granddaughter, Cooper Johnson; also by his brother Verlyn and wife Helen Larson, sister in law Mary Jo Schwab, sister in law Linda Stewart and husband Mike, brother in law John Weber and wife Pam as well as twelve beloved nieces and nephews.
