Jerome Joseph "Jay" Gorrick passed away at his home surrounded by the love of his wife of 58 years, MaryAnn Murzenski Gorrick, in Steiner Ranch, Austin, Texas. Jay was born in Duryea, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1943. He is predeceased by his father Bernard Gorrick, his mother Mary Koziel Gorrick and his brothers Alfred and Ronald Gorrick.
He graduated in 1964 from Kings College in Wilkes Barre, PA with a mathematics degree. In 1965 he married his high school sweetheart, MaryAnn Murzenski, who survives. He earned a masters degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1972. He leaves three daughters, Anne Gorrick (Peter Genovese), Maria Gorrick (Tim Whistler) and Ellen Homoya (Gregory Homoya) and 2 beloved grandchildren, Estella and Sutton Homoya. He will be missed by his entire family and his cousin Emile "Bud" Haas and his wife Dorothy and many close friends.
He worked at IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York for 28 years as a systems analyst. He attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York where he grew in his love of the culinary arts. He taught wine appreciation classes in Poughkeepsie for many years. With these experiences, Jay and MaryAnn were able to fulfill their lifelong dream of owning and operating a bed & breakfast. In 2000 they opened the "Inn at the Park" in Cape May, NJ. The Inn was an 1893 Queen Anne Victorian that was beautifully renovated under their direction. Jay and MaryAnn would often dress in Victorian garb to welcome guests over their 16 years in Cape May. He was a gracious host who made people feel welcome and loved in his home.
He enjoyed a good Manhattan with family and friends, followed by a great meal (he made a mean Osso Bucco and loved to discuss the wine pairing). He enjoyed many years of travel to Aruba; all seasons, especially summer at the Jersey shore; jazz concerts and gambling. He was a wonderful and kind husband, father and grandfather (Paw-Paw).
A funeral service will be held for Jay Gorrick on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway. We thank Hospice Austin for their exceptional care the last 6 months of his life. Donations in his memory can be made to Hospice Austin and Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway, Texas.
