Carol Elaine Ramsey Mayo passed away on August 14th, 2022, at the age of 75, after an 8-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was surrounded by her family, who were incredibly grateful to be with her during her final days.
Carol was born in 1946, in Gadsden, AL, to Louie and Naomi Ramsey. At a young age, Louie nicknamed Carol “Scooter”, because of her high energy, which had her scooting around from one activity to the next. Her older brother, Aubrey Allen (Buddy) Ramsey, whom she looked up to and adored, passed in 2020.
Carol is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lawrence (Larry) Green Mayo, her son Marc Ramsey
Mayo, and her daughter Ashley Elaine Dougherty (husband Jamie). Her four grandchildren, who lovingly call her Mimi, are Caroline Grace Dougherty (15), James (Brady) Dougherty (13), Skyler Marin Mayo (14) and River Magnolia Mayo (9).
Carol and Larry met in Birmingham, AL when they were 20 years old, were “pinned” 6 months later, and married on March 23rd, 1968. Carol was taking a break from college, living in Birmingham, and working at the Alabama Power Company where she met Larry, who was a civil engineering student at Auburn, and also working at Alabama Power as a co-op student. They lived in the same apartment complex, and would take turns driving each other to work. They got married while still in college, moved back to Auburn, and lived in the married housing apartments on campus. Back at Auburn, Carol worked for the Dean of
Women, Katharine Cater, who was a mentor to her, and encouraged Carol to complete her degree. Not only did Carol complete her undergraduate degree at Auburn, she went on to earn two Master’s
Degrees: a Master’s of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master’s of Business Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Carol was an educator, and taught high school in Birmingham, AL and Richmond, VA, and taught community college courses in Naperville, IL. After completing her second Master’s degree at UTSA, she became the Business Education Coordinator for the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio, TX, where she worked until she retired.
Carol was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing golf, shopping, and spending time with her friends and family, especially her four grandchildren. She had a close-knit group of women that she was friends with since high school, and loved to travel with this fun group. Even as Alzheimer’s erased her memories and left her unable to recognize her loved ones, she never lost her ability to charm those around her with her positive nature and beautiful smile.
Carol’s family will be throwing a party to celebrate her life on Sunday, September 11th, 2022, from 2-5pm at Flintrock Falls Country Club located at 501 Jack Nicklaus Dr, Austin, TX 78738.
(from FM 620, turn on Flint Rock Rd, across from The Grove, and follow road to guard gate.)
