Philanthropist, Attorney and Business Owner
Gene grew up in Speedway, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University ‘64 where he met his future wife, Shelley. He was a family man above all.
He graduated from Indiana University School of Law in the top 10% of his class, thereby earning a Doctorate of Jurisprudence.
He served in Vietnam, 1968-70 in the Army Corps of Engineers working as both an attorney and contract engineer. Gene decided his primary interest lay in the business world rather than that of law and resumed work at Detroit Diesel Allison, a division of General Motors.
He was a philanthropist in the fields of health as well as education and in 2002 was awarded the Ellis Island Congressional medal, highest honor awarded for civilian service. He was on the board of Kean University, NJ, serving as chairman for several years.
Gene retired in 2010 and he and Shelley spent their winters on Longboat Key, Florida, where he continued to enjoy golf, tennis and fishing with friends and family.
He was the devoted and proud father of Anthony and “Pa” to Adam and Lucia. He was known for his kind and fun-loving spirit as well as his integrity.

Forever Loved and Missed
With his generous yet modest spirit few know of his many extraordinary accomplishments
and of his gifts and help to others.
But Gene can long be remembered for his ready smile and his concern for others - always wanting
the best for everyone.
He had a gift for enjoying life and many pursuits but also had the gift of natural leadership, using
It to make the world a better place.
His greatest gift may be his appreciation and thankfulness for all he had. One of his final
words was that of thanks.
Services will be scheduled for a future date for the Sarasota area.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dorsey-smithmemorygardens.com for the Enlow family.
