Mrs. Doris Merz Wyckoff died January 25, 2017 at home surrounded by her family in Atlantis, Fla., six weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday on December 14, 2016. Mrs. Wyckoff was predeceased by her husband Russell L., son Robert R., father Paul J. Merz and mother Elsie Helrigel Merz.
She is survived by her daughter Susan W. Fell of Atlantis, and her partner Paul A. Frino of Fanwood, N.J.; son Douglas L. and his wife Janice A. of Rahway, N.J.; and daughter-in-law Barbara F. Wyckoff of Scotch Plains, N.J. Mrs. Wyckoff was blessed with three beloved grandchildren: Darielle W. Kujawski (David) of Franklin, Mass.; Jessica W. Cooney (Liam) of Wilton, Conn.; and Taryn W. Dwan (Kevin) of Arnold, Md., and with nine great grandchildren: Griffin, Landon and Kellan Kujawski; Aidan, Connor and Madison Cooney; and Ashlyn, Teagan and Evelyn Dwan.
A graduate of Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Mrs. Wyckoff started her career in retailing for Hahne & Co., an upscale department store in Newark, N.J., which eventually became Lord & Taylor. Married in 1946, she and her husband Russell co-founded The Westfield Shopper in 1948, which evolved into The Suburban News, a highly successful community newspaper in Union County, N.J. A vounteer leader in community and school activities, Mrs. Wyckoff retired in 1986 and moved from Westfield and Normandy Beach, N.J., to Florida as a snowbird until 1997 when she and her daughter Susan moved permanently to Atlantis.
An avid bridge player and enthusiastic golfer, Mrs. Wyckoff enjoyed the company of many dear friends at Plainfield Country Club, N.J., and at the Atlantis Country Club and the Atlantis Golf Club.
A long-time parishoner of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1000 Lantana Road, Lantana, Fla., a Celebration of Life Mass will take place at the church, 1000 Lantana Road, Lantana, Florida, on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, N.J.
