Mr. Habetz was a retired farmer, Army Veteran of World War II, former president of the South Beauregard Water System, President of Habetz Farms, Inc. an active member and Trustee of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Ragley where he and his wife donated the land for the church. He received the Papal Medal Benemerenti in 1970, Devoted Service Medal in 1981 and was an Executive Committee member of the lay honoree of the Diocese of Lake Charles. He was a Fourth Degree Knight.
He will be most remembered for his great love and devotion to his Lord, family, community and country and for his fun character. He was a man of great integrity modeling a deeply rooted German work ethic. He lovingly cleared and cultivated a thriving farm through much toil and endurance but his greatest pride lies in the lives of his wife and family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Agnes Leonards Habetz; and 7 children: Carl and wife Debbie (Darbonne) Habetz, Ronald and wife DeAnna (Darbonne) Habetz, Marilyn Habetz, David and wife Andrea (Bruce) Habetz, Janelle and husband Ted Bruce, Richard and wife Darlene (Tugwell) Habetz; and Loretta and husband Johnny (Bud) Darbonne, Jr. and close family friend, Sister Diane Depwe, SFCC. All are from the Ragley/Longville area. He had 31 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren with a total of 107 family members including spouses.
He is survived by four sisters Sister Marie Habetz of San Antonio, Cecilia Zaunbrecher of Crowley, Bernardine Leonards of Durald and Bertha Owen of Saltillo, Mexico. He had a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by one son Gregory Anthony Habetz; his parents, Joseph Wilhelm Habetz and Franziska (Theunissen) Habetz; five brothers: Pirmin, Monsignor Daniel, Joseph, Anton and Martin Habetz; and two sisters, Clara and Hilda Habetz.
Visitation will be Easter Sunday 4:00 -8:00 PM at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles with a Scripture and Rosary Service at 7:00 PM, led by his nephew Rev. Thomas Habetz. Visitation will continue at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Moss Bluff, Monday, April 25th from 8:00 -10:00 AM with the Funeral Liturgy beginning at 10:00 AM. Rev. Charles McMillin will officiate. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles.
