R.D. was born on February 18, 1921, in Lone Pine, Louisiana and had lived in Kinder for 60 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army and fought in WWII and the Pacific. After his service, he met Ava Virginia LaCaze, the love of his life and wife of 64 years. He was a plant operator for Gifford Hill & Company retiring in 1975. It was in an accident in 1949 at Gifford Hill that he lost his arm and was forever known as " the one-arm man”.
R.D. was the first deacon of the Indian Village Baptist Church where he served as the S.S. Superintendent, taught classes of all ages, and sang in the choir.
He loved watching his boys play football at Kinder High School and McNeese State University. He continued attending games until 2005. He was honored in 1991 to be the Grand Marshal of the Kinder High School Homecoming Parade.
Survivors include his wife, Ava LaCaze Carter; sons, John D. Carter and wife, Agnes of Liberty, TX, C. Zane Carter and wife, Susie of Lake Charles, LA; daughter, Jacqueline C. Pugh and husband, Steve of The Woodlands, TX; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Emily Carter; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Family will receive friends from 4:00pm to 9:00pm on Saturday, February 11th at the Indian Village Baptist Church and resume Sunday 9am until time of service. Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 12th in the Indian Village Baptist Church. Rev. E.J. McCann and the Rev. Terry Bushnell will officiate. Burial will be in the Green Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor R.D.'s memory are encouraged to make a donation to the Indian Village Baptist Church or The Gideons International.
