Betty Lou McKellar went to be with our Lord on September 19th, 2017. Betty Lou was born on November 19, 1930 in Lake Charles, LA to the late W. E. “Daddy Mac” and Isabel McKellar. She was an alumna of Louisiana State University and McNeese State College, and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae. Betty Lou moved to central Texas in the mid sixties and was employed as a purchasing agent in the aircraft maintenance industry.
Betty Lou was grounded in the southern traditions of Lake Charles and returned to her home town in the late eighties; moving back to care for her ailing mother. She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles. She was involved in numerous church activities and functions, and was faithful in areas of service. She enjoyed working in her yard and brought the fresh perfume of flowers inside her home whenever possible. During her lifetime, she had three dogs; two different beagles and later a Yorkshire terrier; they were her four-legged family members and loyal companions. Betty Lou thoroughly enjoyed entertaining; she had the knowledge of southern hospitality and could set and serve a table of guests like no other. Betty Lou loved and adored her family and friends and never missed recognizing a birthday or special occasion in our lives by sending a card or hand-written note.
Betty Lou was preceded in death by her father and mother, W.E “Daddy Mac” and Isabel McKellar of Lake Charles, LA.; her brother, W.E “Edwin Jr.” McKellar of Beaumont, TX., her sister-in-law, Alice McKellar, of Beaumont, TX., her sister, MayBell Hill of Houston, TX., and niece Susan Brown.
Betty Lou was survived by six nieces and nephews: Bill (and Michele) McKellar of Steamboat Springs, CO., Kathleen Vincent of Beaumont, TX., Pam (and David) Johns of Austin, TX., Jim (and Jody) Hill of New Braunfels, TX., Ed (and Yvonne) Hill of Flippin, AR., and Suzanne (and Bill) Payne of Mountain Home, AR.. as well as several great and great, great nieces and nephews.
Words cannot express our heartfelt gratitude to Reverend Chan Willis and the family of friends from First Presbyterian Church and other neighbors who were Betty Lou's “Lake Charles” family; you all meant the world to her and she loved you dearly and appreciated each one of you. The family would like to express their appreciation to Mary Mouton and her team of in-home caregivers that were Betty Lou's companions these last several months overseeing her day-to-day needs. We also would like to thank Harbor Hospice; the director, the nurses, and chaplain, for their service and care.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 30th, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 2525 2nd Ave., Lake Charles, LA. with Reverend Chan Willis officiating. Visitation will be at 1:30pm and the Memorial service will begin at 2pm; light refreshments will be served immediately following. Cremation has been entrusted to Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lake Charles' “building fund”. Words of comfort may be shared with the family atwww.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
