She was a native of Oak Grove, Louisiana and lived in Sweet Lake for 65 years. Mrs. Cox was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sweet Lake and was a longtime member and supporter of Farm Bureau. She will always be remembered by her family and friends as the Matriarch of the James Cox family, as a surrogate mother to all who knew her, Me Me, to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and as Mama Cox to her extended family.
Althea is preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Esther (Nunez) Meaux, husband, James Cox, son, Terry Lynn Cox and sister, Frances “Punk” Schmid. She is survived by her sister, Madge Reina and husband, JC of Oak Grove, son, James “Bozo” Cox and wife, Ruthie Vallet Cox of Sweet Lake, daughter in law, Valerie Cox Unkel and husband Pete, of Kinder, daughter, Beverly Cox of Sweet Lake, grandchildren, Melissa Ogea and husband, Greg of Big Lake, Laura Reeves of Sweet Lake, Mindy Beeson and husband, Dean of Baton Rouge, David Cox and wife, Sasha of Katy, Texas, Sadie Savant and husband, Eric of Kinder and eleven great grandchildren.
A special thanks to Ro Risa Pearce for always being available for medical guidance, Gloria Rolland, Mary “Cissy” Nunez and granddaughter, Melissa Ogea for their loving care, Heart of Hospice for their special ability, skills and support needed for our mom’s journey home and Renee Reina for her support, knowledge and guidance during this difficult journey.

Visitation will be 5-9pm, Monday, April 23, 2018 with a rosary at 6:30pm and resume Tuesday from 8am until time of service at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Funeral Service will Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 11am at St. Mary of the Lake Church. Msgr. James Gaddy will officiate. Interment will follow at Sweet Lake United Methodist Church Cemetery.
