Sue Smith, long time resident of LaGrange, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024 after a courageous 3-year battle with cancer. Sue was born on Feb. 11, 1938 in Athens, TN to the late John and Vera Parker.
Sue was a graduate from Pike County High School. She attended Eastern Kentucky University, where she met the love of her life, Harold Smith, of Gray Hawk, KY. They both served in the Baptist Student Union (BSU) on campus; Sue as pianist and Harold as president. They married December 27, 1960. As an only child, Sue married into Harold’s large family, now having 10 siblings. They moved to New Albany, IN where Sue taught 4th grade at New Albany Elementary while Harold finished law school at University of Louisville. They later made their home in LaGrange where Harold practiced law and they raised their two daughters.
Sue was a long time member of DeHaven Baptist Church where she first served as pianist and later sang in the choir. She also was a member of the LaGrange Woman’s Club for many years. Sue was a great cook and loved hosting many church functions and enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their home. You could always find her on a piano or organ bench making music with one or both of her girls. She was a wonderful mother who loved her daughters well and was the perfect compliment to her spouse of almost 63 years.
Sue also served as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital Northeast for over 30 years and never met a stranger, as she graciously welcomed folks from the main desk.
A strong woman of faith, Sue was an inspiration to so many as she soldiered through her health battle. Giving praise always to her Lord Jesus for giving her joy in the midst of pain, her faith never wavered. After losing the love of her life just 7 months earlier, Sue “won” her battle with cancer and was called home to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior and her dear husband, family and friends.
Sue mostly loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband and her parents. Left to cherish the memory of Sue are her daughters Marti Moore (Scott) and Sandi Sybert (Matt), Grandchildren; Matthew Moore (Emily),
Katie Barnes (Justin), Abigail Sybert, and Noah Sybert, Great-Grandchildren; Harry and Charlie Moore, and Lily Barnes.
Visitation was held on Good Friday, March 29, 2024 from 12-2pm at DeHaven Baptist Church in LaGrange, with a celebration of life service following at 3 pm.
Expressions of sympathy can be made to Good News Homes or DeHaven Baptist Church.
