He was born in Lagrange, KY to the late Arthur Dora and Hattie Lucille Curtis Mefford, part of what would become a family of twelve children.
Hugh grew up farming and hunting around Kentucky and Indiana. He continued to enjoy keeping a garden and roaming the woods to hunt deer way into his adult years. During his youth, he also developed his vocation as a top-notch Pressman, enjoying the many challenging and interesting projects that came his way from various businesses in both the cities of Philadelphia and Louisville. While in Philadelphia, he became an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, and then a loyal Wildcat fan once he settled back in his hometown in Kentucky. Attending numerous games and gatherings to root for his teams kept him boisterous and active. His enjoyment of Bluegrass music took him on many camping trips through the years, as he found it hard to pass up a good festival, especially if he could hang out with his siblings along the way. On most occasions, Hugh/Papaw came prepared in the “Big Horn” for impromptu card games and corn hole. Above all, his smile and hugs were felt on numerous occasions and milestones that he attended with his beloved family! His loving presence and desire to serve his family have left beautiful memories and great recipes for generations to come.
He is preceded in death by daughter, Brenda Jo Mefford; stepson, Robert Lewellen; son-in-law, Jimmy Angell; granddaughter, Lindsay Angell; great-grandson, Matthew Stoess; and 5 siblings.
