Thomas P. Steele

Mr. Steele was born January 19, 1947 in Columbia, SC to Bernice E. Steele and the late Thomas Pinkney Steele, Sr. He pastored several congregations, was a Professor of Theology at LaGrange College, and served as Chaplain at LaGrange Hospice. Mr. Steele will be fondly remembered for starting the Nativity Lutheran Church in Brandon, MS.

Always curious about life and his relationship with God, Mr. Steele was Lutheran pastor, a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and a member of the Carrollton Friends Worship Group (Quakers). He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Ellen, browsing bookstores for interesting and engaging books, and discussing insights gathered from his vast religious studies.

Mr. Steele leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Ellen Clegg Steele; his children, Jennifer (Kirk) Sanderson, Jason (Jenny) Steele, Susan Steele, and Polly Griesbach; grandchildren, Madelyn Bowman, Kadie Bowman, Jacob Bowman, Lillian Steele, and Evelyn Steele; mother, Bernice E. Steele; sister, Patricia (Mike) Raible; other relatives and friends.

Tom was blessed with abiding love by and for parents, sister, wife, children, grandchildren, and many friends and acquaintances. The love for each was different but only strengthened, never diminished, by its diversity.’—but the greatest of these is love.’ For Tom it was an honor to watch and be a part of growth and development of many students and colleagues over a lifetime. This was rewarding and fun and brought great satisfaction to his life.

A Life Celebration Service will be held 7:00pm Friday, August 18, 2017 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Chaplain John Evans and Mr. Marty Bray officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to JDRF- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Hospice LaGrange in memory of Thomas P. Steele.
