Mr. Borders was born December 9, 1922, the son of the late Homer Bell Borders and Marion Wynn Borders. He attended LaGrange High School and Gordon Military Academy and served as a Gunner’s Mate in the US Navy aboard the liberty ship Frank R. Stockton which saw action in the invasion of Normandy. He joined H.B. Borders Packing Company after the war and with his father and brother also developed rental property. He was a member of the LaGrange Methodist Church, a member of the Elks Club, a 33rd Degree Mason and Past President of the LaGrange Shrine Club. After the sale of the packing company, he worked as a Supervisor for Holiday Construction Company during the construction of the West Point Dam. Upon retirement he returned to residential contracting and repair. In each of these endeavors, his greatest pleasure was found in his day to day interaction with people from all walks of life.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa Hug Borders; sons, John P. Borders, Jr. and Thomas H. Borders and his wife, Belinda F.; daughter, Rosanna M. Borders; grandsons, Thomas H., Jr, Matthew C. and his wife, Gina S., and Christopher P. Borders; granddaughter, Anna W. Pfeifer; great granddaughters, Allison E. Borders and Gabrielle K. Pfeifer; great grandson, Matthew C. Borders, Jr.; sister, Virginia Whitley; sister-in-law, Martha P. Borders; and several nieces and nephews including Virginia (Jenny) Miller and her husband Jeffrey H. of LaGrange. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Clayton; his parents, his brother, Homer Borders, Jr., and a sister, Elizabeth Ballenger.
Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 in the Chapel of LaGrange First United Methodist Church. The gathering of family and friends will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall. A private burial will be held in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions may be made to West Georgia Hospice, 1510 Vernon Rd., LaGrange, GA 30240, or a charity of choice in memory of John P. Borders.
