Celia Torres Melvin

Celia Torres Melvin (79), of La Mesa passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023, at Sharp Memorial Hospital, San Diego. She was born on September 17, 1943, in Jalpa, Zacatecas to Jose Jesus & Belen Romero Torres.

Celia arrived in the United States, and settled in National City, CA when she was 21. She supported herself through cosmetology school and was an accomplished beautician until her retirement at the age of 70. In her retirement, she was involved with many activities, including volunteering at Mama’s Kitchen where she contributed more than 1500 hours since August 2012. Those who know Celia recall she had many loves like spending quality time with dear family and friends, traveling near and far, enjoying music and dancing, cooking amazing meals that she loved to share with others, staying active in her church and faith, and of course gardening.

She is survived by her four children and their families: Carlos Melvin, wife Adriana Ceja Melvin, daughter Kiyra, Vanessa Melvin-Gunn, husband Richard Gunn, Veronica Melvin, husband Jose Hernandez, children Santiago, Ceumara and Amateo and James Melvin, wife Natalie Melvin, children Tomás, Camila; as well as her four siblings and their extensive families: Carlos Romero Torres, Teresa Viramontes, Marta Mijares, and Belem Torres.

Celia was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Alfonso and Salvador.
