Alex Alvarez beloved father passed away April 25, 2023, one day before his 90th birthday. He was born and raised in Lemon Grove. He lost his father Able Alvarez at age 3, and was raised by his mother, Ramona Alvarez along with his five siblings. He graduated from Grossmont High School and City College and was good student and avid reader. Always a very hard worker he helped his mother even at a young age, collecting eggs at a nearby ranch or as a caddy at a La Mesa golf course, taking whatever job to help his mother. Admiring his mother for all her hard work and wisdom, he always lived a life of gratitude as did she. He started work at North Island Naval Air Station in 1952 until he was drafted in the Korean War and Stationed in Tacoma Washington.
Meeting the love of his life Antoinette at the Sugar Plum soda fountain in Lemon Grove, they married, and she joined him in Washington. Moving back home after the Army, he continued to work at North Island for the next 36 years. His beloved Antoinette precedes him in death after 70 years of marriage. Together they built an amazing family and life full of joy. Family was everything and continues with the generations that follow.
There are many words to describe our dad who has been such an inspiration to our family. He was always kind to everyone. Selfless, in caring for his wife with Alzheimer's, generous with his time to help anyone. Sincere in his concern for others, everyone that knew him had own personal relationship with him making them feel special. Hard working, often holding two jobs and going to school to build a better life for his family. He was not judgmental, we never heard him speak badly of anyone and always lived a life of gratitude. As our mentor, friend, and father, we will be forever grateful having him in our lives. He will be missed but remembered always as the good man he was.
He is survived by his daughter Theresa Tingle (Dave Tingle), son Stephen Alvarez (Cindy Alvarez). Grandsons, David Tingle (Nikki Tingle), Stephen Tingle (Julie Tingle), Brady Alvarez (Monica Alvarez), granddaughter, Alexis Escalera (Jason Escalera), grandson, Connor Alvarez. Great-grandchildren; Jacob Tingle, Blake Tingle, Jameson Tingle, Alex Tingle, and Gabriela Escalera.
Alex’s memorial service will held on Monday June 19th at 10 AM at Santa Sophia Catholic Church. Reception following mass.
