After a full life, and surrounded by her family, Margaret Ann Mitchell entered her eternal rest on October 3, 2024 at the age of 94 in Harlingen, Texas and her hope of eternal salvation was fulfilled. She was born July 7,1930 in San Antonio Texas and is preceded in death by her father Robert Forrest Mitchell, mother Margaret Knight Mitchell, brother Daniel Forrest Mitchell and sister-in-law Thelma Josephine Mitchell.
She is survived by her nephews Forrest (Kenya) Mitchell, Mark (Kay) Mitchell, and David (Noelia) Mitchell. She is also survived by her grand-nephew Robert (Lauren) Mitchell, grand-niece Evie Mitchell and great-grand-nephew Daniel Mitchell. She is also survived by her pup Maggie and her cat Kitty, both rescues and both dear companions.
Margaret grew up during the Great Depression. That along with a close family, an exceptional work ethic and her desire to serve Christ, shaped her into the woman and leader she became.
Most of her work years were spent with Southwestern Bell, later to become AT&T. She was the first woman to hold the management position she was promoted to in Harlingen. She had a strength of character and a personal resolve that allowed her to maintain that position for 37 years, before she retired. She had many wonderful stories of all the people she worked with and many of them became her life-long friends.
She also had dear friendships from her church family that she enjoyed until her passing. They called her, visited, brought many meals, gifts and other comforts that kept her engaged in the community of believers.
She had a servant’s heart and was generous to a fault. She took any opportunity to witness her faith to those who would listen. She worked tirelessly as a Bible class teacher, committee and choir member, host of many church events, and a benefactor to many worthy causes.
She was an avid gardener, and mowed her own lawn to the age of 91. She was a quilter and spent many early years fishing. She poured concrete, built fences, installed flooring, built decks, created water gardens, made incredible fudge, baked awesome rolls, and even grilled a perfect ribeye steak.
She was devoted to her brother, sister-in-law and her three nephews, moving in 1972 to Harlingen from San Antonio, Texas to be closer to them. Even after her brother Daniel passed in 1991 she continued her close relationship with Thelma. Together they rarely missed a good auction, filling Thelma’s little pickup repeatedly with their treasures.
She loved animals and had many cats and pups over the course of her life. She spoke often of one day having them greet her at the Rainbow Bridge.
Family was important to Aunt Margaret and she hosted many gatherings at her warm home and traveled throughout her life to visit family. She was never one to shy away from a good road trip. Holidays with the family will change forever and Friday’s dinners with her will be missed by her nephew David and niece Noelia.
She had several attentive, loving providers that helped keep her in the best of health and the family is grateful to them, but her dearest and closest is Hilda Garza who became family. With her devoted attention Margaret was given additional years with a quality of life only tender loving care can provide.
With deference to Paul the apostle and the Holy scripture, Margaret has fought the good fight she has finished the course, she has kept the faith; and now there is laid up for her the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to those who love His appearing.
A visitation for Margaret will be held Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 5PM to 9PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Heavenly Grace Funeral Home, 26873 N. White Ranch Road, La Feria, TX 78559. A chapel service will occur Friday, October 11, 2024 from 1PM with a burial to follow.
