Larry James Eunice, 85 years old, passed from this earth on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Lafayette, Louisiana in February 1937. He graduated from Lafayette High School, Class of 1955. While in high school he worked as a disc jockey at a local radio station. This job led to his interest in the entertainment business. After graduation, he attended college locally in Lafayette for two semesters, and then decided to enlist in the United States Air Force in 1957.
Larry met the love of his life, Nannette, the neighborhood girl-next-door, after he graduated from high school. They were married in December of 1957 and moved to San Antonio, TX while Larry served in the Unites States Air Force as an entertainment director at Lackland Air Force Base. Their first daughter, Kathy, was born in November 1958 and second daughter, Margaret, in August 1961.
Larry left the Air Force in 1961 and worked locally at a radio station in San Antonio. In 1964, he was hired by Tichenor Media in the Rio Grande Valley, to work at KGBT in Harlingen, TX where he worked in various capacities for both radio and television for forty-four years until his retirement in 2008.
While working at KGBT, Larry got involved in fundraising and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the annual Labor Day Telethon. He enjoyed meeting the clients, attending special events and MDA conferences.
Larry and Nan are members of Wesley UMC, Harlingen where he has served in many capacities for church committees, events, and special projects. He loved spending quality time with his family and friends going fishing, hunting, family vacations, and an occasional golf game. Studying about the weather and understanding as much as he could about local meteorology was always an important past time. He was a devoted grandfather to his two grandsons, their wives, and most recently his new great-grandson.
Larry is survived by his wife Nannette of Harlingen, TX, their two daughters Kathy Eunice of Harlingen, TX, and Margaret Stanush (Harold) of La Vernia, TX.; his two grandsons Benjamin Stanush (Megan) of New Braunfels, TX, and Jonathan Stanush (Monica) of Hondo, TX and his great-grandson, Wesley Stanush.
Larry is preceded in death by his mother, Anna Mouhot and step-father, Harvey Mouhot both of Lafayette, LA; his father Jimmy Eunice, step-mother, Sybil Eunice, two brothers, Benny Eunice and Philip Eunice all of Houma, LA, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents.
The family appreciates all the outpouring of love and tributes in his memory, as well as the many caregivers and medical staff who cared for him these past several months. A private family graveside service will be held later. There are no local services planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made in Larry’s memory to:
Wesley UMC 1406 E. Austin Ave. Harlingen, TX 78550, or Harlingen Community Theatre 1209 Fair Park Blvd Harlingen, TX 78550, or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at mda.org
