John Marcellus Spartz, age 91, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, November 11, 2024. He was born on October 21, 1933, in Russell, Minnesota, to Elmer Frank Spartz and Eleanor La Raine Smith.
John was drafted into the Army in 1954 for two years and from there he studied at South Dakota State College in Brookings, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in history.
After graduation, he taught Social Science, Science and English at Raymond Public School in Raymond, South Dakota until 1967. He then worked for Midland Oil Company in Isle, MN as a station manager until 1969. He returned to teaching in 1969 in St. Cloud, MN at Holy Spirit Elementary School. He transferred to Cathedral High School in the early 70's and worked there until 1975.
Throughout his work life, he had an active involvement with politics. He began volunteering for the 6th District Democratic Party upon arrival in St. Cloud, which led to his eventual position as Minnesota 6th District Democratic Party Chairman. This would eventually lead to a 6th District run for Congress on the Democratic Party ticket. His service to the community continued through his faith.
John received Jesus at the age of 40 at a charismatic renewal in Minnesota. John was a deeply spiritual man who shared God's love with others, and ultimately, he dedicated his life to serving God at Way of the Cross Ministries in Harlingen, TX.
John was an example of a faithful man driven by his purpose and faith in God. He would always challenge those around him to be the best versions of themselves.
Though he had a tough exterior, his heart was of gold, and he would never hesitate to pray for or help someone in need. When John wasn't ministering directly to people, he was working in the ministry office or cooking in the kitchen for ministry groups. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and was loved and admired by many. The impact of John's life will be felt for years to come, and John will be remembered for his quick wit and ability to share the Gospel message with boldness.
John's legacy will live on forever through the many stories he shared and the memories of those who had the opportunity to know him. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. John is survived by his wife Theresa Spartz, beloved daughters Amanda Keener, Riley and Madison Spartz, sons Mark Spartz, Bruce Spartz, John Spartz Jr., and Adam Spartz, his sisters Catherine Bullerman, Mary Linneman, and many nieces and nephews, all dearly loved by John.
A celebration service will take place on December 8, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Way of the Cross Church where we will remember John's life and rejoice that he is now in the presence of the Lord.
