Erasmo, fondly known as "Mo", was born to Erasmo and Ernestina Molina on December 29, 1945 in Edinburg, TX. Raised in Faysville, TX, Erasmo was a proud graduate of Edinburg High School class of 1965. He later graduated with a Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree from Pan American College.
Erasmo Molina, more popularly known as Coach Mo, graced the sidelines of the RGV high school basketball courts for over 40 years. With over 500 wins earned at Rio Hondo, San Benito, PSJA, McAllen Memorial, Rio Grande City, and Marine Military Academy, he achieved greatness in the the RGV basketball community. He also served as Associate Head Coach of the Continental Basketball Association-RGV Silverados.
Molina served as past President of the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association, nominated to coach at the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game multiple times, had numerous articles published in Texas Coach Magazine in addition to being a lecturer in serval basketball clinics throughout the State. He also served on the Board of Directors for THSCA for 4 years. In 2010, Molina was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was then inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
In addition to serving the RGV sports community, Coach Molina served our country as a soldier in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era where he was stationed in Germany for almost three years and attained the rank of SP5.
Mo is survived by his beloved wife Liz, his two children Brian and Lyrissa, and his two grandsons Jaelen and Tristan. He is also survived by his siblings Lucy Fernandez (Al) of Weslaco, Rudy Molina (Gloria) of San Antonio, Cristina Saenz (David) of Lyford, Robert Molina (Nena) of Azle, Rey Molina of Edinburg, and Cristela Torres (Rene) of Edinburg. He is also survived by his Sisters-in-law Yolanda Trdla (Ray) of Mission, Telvy Cavazos (Joe) of San Antonio, and Cindy Robledo (Arnold) of Harlingen and Rosie Molina of Weslaco. Molina is survived by many loving nieces, nephews which he greatly cherished. Erasmo was preceded in death by his parents Erasmo and Ernestina Molina, his brothers Gustavo of Weslaco and Alex Molina of Pharr, and his brother in law Robert Gonzalez of Nevada.
Aside from his love of basketball, Molina was strong in his faith and deeply adored his family (his TEAM"). He will be remembered for his sweet smile, his gentle voice, his humble spirit, his kind heart, and his wise words. His legacy will be carried on through the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, former athletes and loved ones as we share loving memories and treasured moments of his life.
The Molina Family will host a Celebration of Life for Erasmo "Mo" Molina on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. The service will be held at Marine Military Academy in King Gymnasium. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Children's Bereavement Center of the RGV.
