Michael was the roots of a tree and just as solid. He taught me how to truly enjoy and relish in the magnificence of what mother nature provides for our viewing pleasure. He was always in awe. Working beside him was such a greatness in my life. Oh Michael... thank you for your knowledge,  your stories, your heart and for always being genuine. Thank you for coming into my life when you did. It may not have been long, but it was right when I needed it.

Michael was a gentle giant who's  presence and passions will stand before many generations to come. His work illustrates the beauty and natural wonders of this world. I am so privileged to have spent so many lunches with you beneath the gardens canopy.   

My name is Kelsey Steffen and I lived on Kauai back in 2016.  While living there, my partner Ben Jones worked at the Botanical Garden with Michael.  Michael taught Ben how to care for plants and that understanding has been passed onto me.  

A fond memory I have of him was when he and his lovely partner Patti had us over for Thanksgiving the year we lived there.  They cooked us a delicious meal and introduced us to Oregon wine (Ben never buys anything other than Oregon wine now, thanks to Michael's impeccable taste.)  After dinner we all watched the movie The Little Prince and I remember feeling so at ease with the wise souls in the room that were kind enough to feed me.  

During the week that Ben and I were set to leave Kauai to move to NYC, Michael stopped at our RV to gift us a lovely card that had a 20 inside.  He instructed us to buy ourselves a nice bottle of red when we "got our new digs."  We did just that and toasted in his honor.  After learning of his passing, we'll do the same today.
