Virginia M. Fennimore, 92, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. Born June 6, 1919, in Howard County, Virginia was the daughter of Fred and Marie Learner Gates. Graduating from Howard Township High School in 1937 she received a two-year elementary teaching certificate from Indiana Central College in 1939 and taught 4th and 5th grades at Clay Township Elementary, Center School in Taylor Township and Greentown Elementary School from 1939 to 1943.
On May 20, 1945 she married Emanuel “Fennie” Fennimore who passed away in 1972. In May of 1946 she received her bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University. While raising a family she taught at Central Elementary School in Kokomo (1951-1953), Indian Heights at Taylor Township (1963-1965), Randall Elementary School at Maconaquah Schools (1966-1968) and Sharpsville Elementary (1969).
Virginia was a member of the Kokomo Woman’s Department Club, the Retired Teachers Association, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Grace United Methodist Church. She is survived by daughters Linda (Gary) Terrel of Noblesville, Trudy (Jon) Rockenbaugh of Elkhart and son Gary (Diane) Fennimore of Camby. Grandchildren are Adrian (Erika) Terrel of Fishers, Adam Rockenbaugh of Kokomo, Andrew (Christina Myers) Rockenbaugh of Indianapolis, Amy (Kenny Mattson) Rockenbaugh of Hegewisch, Illinois, Arianna (Caleb) Koval and Alanna Fennimore, Camby. Great-grandchildren are Milena and Matthew Terrel, Alexander and Chloe Rockenbaugh. Grandson David Rockenbaugh and great-grandson Andrew Terrel preceded her in death.
Virginia’s ashes will be interred next to her husband at Sunset Memory Garden. The family would like to thank the members of Grace United Methodist Church and the Forest Park neighbors for helping Virginia remain in her home for so long. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry, Kokomo, IN.
