Mary Ruth Hawkins, 104, of Kokomo, went to be with the Lord December 26, 2011. Ruth was born May 10, 1907 to Eli and Ida Allen on a farm 3 miles north of Fairmount. She and R. Ernest Hawkins were married on June 14, 1935 on the lawn of that farm. Ruth graduated from a one room school, attended Fairmount Friends Academy, and graduated from Jonesboro High School. She first attended Marion College, then known as Marion Business College, and later transferred to Kokomo Business College. Her first employment was with Reiss Manufacturing Company for two years and then Northern Indiana Power Company for another nine years. She was secretary for Union Street Friends Church for several years. When the congregation moved to become First Friends Meeting on Zartman Road, Ruth continued on in an active part with the choir, various committees and was the foremost pie baker for the fund-raising church dinners. Besides devoted time to family and friends, her personal pastimes included extensive reading and playing Scrabble.
Ruth was an inspiration to all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family was blessed by her living example of wisdom, love and Christian values. She touched many hearts and will be dearly missed but forever remembered.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers and their wives, John (Ethel) Allen, Verlou (Mae) Allen, Orville (Helen) Allen and Eber (Eileen) Allen; in-laws, Amy Catt, Earl, Ralph, Agnes Hawkins; two great grandsons, Alex Hawkins, and Logan Hawkins; and great granddaughter, Valerie Berg.
She is survived by a son, Allen R. Hawkins, Kokomo; a daughter, Lois Ann (Raymond) Berg, Crown Point; a son, George M. (Alexia McHale) Hawkins, Russiaville; a special great niece, Jenny Smith, Kokomo; grandchildren, Christopher (Santana) Hawkins, Alyssa Hawkins, Kurt (Susan) Hawkins, Burt (Stacy) Hawkins, all of Russiaville, Kathy (Brett) Lee, Sonoma, California, Thomas (Lori) Berg, Dyer, Kenneth (Kathleen) Berg, St. John, and Michael (Julie) Berg, Cedar Lake; great grandchildren, William Hawkins, Hannah Hawkins, Victoria Hawkins, Jayson Hawkins, Alexis Hawkins, Angel Hawkins, Jaxon Creason, Megan Hawkins, Annie Claire Hawkins, Ashley Hawkins, Emily Hawkins, Rose Lee, Mark Berg, Jackie Berg, Nicole Berg, Steven Berg, Christina Berg, Elanor Berg, and Eric Berg.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Friends Meeting. The service will be administered by Pastor Annie Glen. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.
