SSMGT Gilbert A. Mills, United States Air Force retired, 94, West Middleton, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born June 30, 1921 in Loudon, Tennessee, the son of the late Rev. Gilford Henry Cottrell-Mills and the late Viola (Nix) Cottrell-Mills.
On May 2, 1949, Gilbert married Goldie L. (Hoffman) Mills and she passed away Nov. 10, 2008. Gilbert proudly served in the United States Navy and then the United States Air Force for 33 years; and was a member of the Walton Masonic Lodge #423.
He is survived by his Sister Edith McCall of Loudon, TN; children, Robert Mills, Tallahassee, FL, Joyceline Mills, El Paso, TX, Barry Mills, Florida, and Jamie (Mark) Buckalew, Kokomo, IN; son-in-law, Wayne Jones, Niceville, FL, daughter-in-law, Lola Mills, Logansport, IN; grand-children, Brandi (Garry) Gruber, Cristi (Eric) Furman, Cherie Jones, Jennifer (Armando) Foster, Regina Mills, Dustin (Bekki) Mills, Trevor Buckalew, Breanne Buckalew; and several great-grandchildren.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Richard Junior Mills and Ivan Mills; sister, Ruby Hill; daughter, Jacqueline Jones; and son, William Mills.
The family would like to thank Gilbert’s caretakers Sherry Rhoades, Shelia Rhoades, and Mariah McCoy for all the wonderful care they provided to him. A funeral service to honor Gilbert will be held at 2 pm Monday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 1pm-2pm Monday at the funeral home. The service will start with a Masonic Memorial Service by the Walton Masonic Lodge #423. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the United States Air Force and the Kokomo VFW Honor Guard.
