Age 85 – Slipped away from this world to a much better place on Friday, April 21, 2017 at his home in Norris, TN, where he had lived since 1967. For years he had suffered from poor eyesight due to glaucoma, then dementia, and then finally kidney cancer took him away.
Survived by his four children: sons: William, Jr. (Pete); Steve and wife Mary; Jimmy; and daughter Lisa. Six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Former wife, friend, and mother of his children Judy Parton. Several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents Francis Eugene Moore Sr. and Winnie Owen Moore; sister Mary and husband Rev. Clarence Breese; brothers: F.E. Jr. and wife Laverne; Bernard, and Franklin.
Bill graduated from Chattanooga Central High School, then joined the Air Force serving in Germany as an Interpreter for 4 years. After being honorably discharged, he attended the University of Tennessee of Knoxville before becoming employed by UT in the chemistry department, where he helped put the radio station WUOT on the air. He was in the first TAT program in Oak Ridge and after graduation was employed by ORNL Y-12 and eventually K-25 plant. After retiring, he kept busy helping friends and neighbors in Norris with most anything they needed - a ride to doctor’s appointments, plumbing, electrical problems - most everything around the house or with automobiles. He was a ‘Mr. Fixit’ Handyman. He had a good heart and was generous to a fault, helping any of us who needed him. He also ran the Norris Laundromat for several years. He was a member of East Lake Methodist Church in Chattanooga and Asbury Methodist Church in Knoxville.
Before his eyesight failed he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, then replaced it with one of his greatest joys listening to music (mostly opera) on radio station WUOT and relaxing in his recliner.
A special thanks to son Jimmy and Covenant Hospice for their loving care during his last days and especially his former caregiver for over 2 years, Karen Tilley, a valued friend to all the family. She was a most caring person, helping anyway she could - a true ‘God send’.
Music will be provided by Mallie White and Karen Tilley.
Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Berry Highland Memorial Chapel on Thursday, April 27, 2017. Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Chaplain Tom Rayford to celebrate Bill’s life.
Burial will be on Friday April 28, 2017 AT 3:00 p.m. in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends may leave their condolences at www.highlandmemorialknoxville.com.
