Shirley Ann Grusenmeyer Haynes, age 65 of Knoxville, TN died December 14, 2021 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, TN from cancer. Born August 6, 1956 in Key West, FL to Frederick Jay and Barbara June Grusenmeyer. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother on June 26, 1993 and her father on May 24, 1996 as well as mother-in-law, June Haynes on July 1, 2009; brothers-in-law, Frank Sholds and Jim Miller, and lifelong friend, Barry Bubb.
Shirley is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 40 years, 6 months, 15 days, Meredyth Scott Haynes. Shirley and Scott were married on Sunday, May 31, 1981 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Scott was the love of Shirley's life. She was also survived by her two daughters, Summer June Hackney (Brian) and Meredyth Ann Hume (Brent); brother, Jay Frederick Grusenmeyer (Sue); sisters, Trudy Lynn Jefferson (Tom), Judy Lee Sholds, and Linda Kay Miller; granddaughter, Olivia June Hume; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and life-long and very dear friends, Karl Grant, Angie Bubb, and Cathern King.
Shirley lived in Jacksonville, FL from 1962 - 2006. She attended Oak Hill Elementary School, Jefferson Davis Jr. High (where she met Scott) and graduated from Nathan Bedford Forrest High School class of 1975. Shirley worked for the Roosevelt Mall May Cohens from 1977 - 1981 and the Gateway May Cohens from 1983 - 1985. She ran a licensed family day care center from 1985 - 1990 and also worked for St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) from 1991 - 1993, Con Sul Med Home Health Care June 1993 - December 1994, Suwannee Home Care from January 1996 - July 1997. Shirley had a wonderful work ethic that shined brightly through her love of children and her compassion and caring of all of her family friends and patients
Shirley started attending St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on 103rd Street, Jacksonville, FL in August 1962 and became a member in 1970. SHe became an ordained elder at St. Andrews in January 2000. She had put in a total of 20 years of Girl Scouting with Gateway Council in Jacksonville, FL. (8 years as a child 1963 - 1971 and 12 years as an adult with her daughters' troops, 1982 - 1994. Shirley joined the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls (with her best friend Angie Johnson Bubb) June 16, 1971, Wesconnett Assembly Number 84, Jacksonville, FL.
Shirley was a devoted wife, and mother, but the highlight of her life was becoming a grammy! Shirley may have lived in Florida most of her life but she had a love for the Tennessee mountains, and the first snow of the season! Shirley's happy place was Dollywood where her and Scott visited frequently!
Shirley's family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 11:00am - 12:00pm at Berry Highland West Funeral Home, 9913 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37932 with a Christian funeral service to follow at 12:00pm with Dr. Rev. Sean White officiating. There will be a Rainbow Girls funeral service as well as entombment to follow in the Mausoleum at Berry Highland West. There will also be a Memorial Service on December 30, 2021 at 4:00pm at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 6317 103rd Street Jacksonville, FL 32210 with a reception to follow.
