Shirley Harper

She was one of eight children born in LaFollette, TN to Ferris and Ethel Lindsay Dagley. Even as the siblings grew older, they remained close. Getting married and having children of their own provided the already large family with even more people to celebrate holidays and life, which was something the family did together often.

Shirley married Jim Harper in 1959, and they made their home in Knoxville. Shirley spent her time preparing homecooked meals and involving her children in sports and church activities. In 1995, Jim and Shirley were thrilled to welcome their first grandchild to the family. With each new grandchild, their hearts expanded with great love and admiration. The legacy of both faith and strong family ties continues to live on in the lives of Jim and Shirley’s children and grandchildren.

Shirley was a long time member of West Lonsdale Baptist Church. She sang in the choir there, rocked many babies, and served many meals. Those who knew her describe her as a humble, gentle soul with a servant’s heart. She was a dedicated mother and Nana, always known by her grandchildren as the person who made the best macaroni and cheese and had a pot on the stove anytime they visited.

Shirley was proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Jim Harper. She was also proceeded by her parents Ferris and Ethel Dagley; Sisters Margaret Dagley, Dorothy Roberts, Betty Hatmaker Green, and Iva Pippin.

She is survived by her children Penny (James) Harper Sams; Dewayne (Angie) Harper, Eric (Carla) Harper; 13 grandchildren; Sister Mary Ann Fritz; Brothers F.H. and Jerry Dagley, cousin/sister, Patsy Earl and a host of other cousins, nephews, nieces and other loved ones.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 27th, from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M. with service immediately following at West Lonsdale Baptist Church. Burial will be Friday, October 28th at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The West Lonsdale Baptist Church building fund.
