Smith, Sherman Eugene, best known as “Smitty”, went to be with the Lord Friday, December 29, 2017. Other than family, some of his proudest accomplishments include: tour guide of Cudjo Caverns at age 9 to help support his family, WWII Navy Seabee veteran, founder of Smitty’s Surgical Specialties, one of the first local businesses open to the general public to purchase medical and surgical supplies, his retirement from Owens & Minor as a top salesman known for his expertise in helping set up local hospitals and multiple medical offices, and his graduation from Knoxville Business College with a business degree. He was preceded in death by Wilma Smith, beloved wife of 43 years; children’s mother, Anne McCoy Smith; daughter, Sharon Smith Kerley; sons, Michael Eugene Smith and Patrick Smith; mother, Effie Smith; brother, Rando Bledsoe; sisters, Hazel Rose and Opal Rindone. Survivors include daughters, Janis McDowell (Michael), Carolyn Smith; daughter-in-law, Connie Smith (Tim Jackson); step children, Helen Roberts, Lynn Dinkens (Debra), John Dinkens (Sandy); grandchildren, Whitney Kerley Boozer, Katherine Scott (David), Brandy Woods (Eddie), Karen Burnett, Jeffrey Smith, Michael Smith, Andrew McDowell, Julia McDowell, Holly Smith; step grandchildren, Sarah Davis (Andrew), Joseph Dinkens, Abby Dinkens, and Allie Dinkens; great grandchildren, Kaiden Collins; step great grandchildren, Benjamin Davis and Noah Davis; sister, Evelyn Lambert; multiple nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Ben Atchley Veterans Home and Fort Sanders Hospital for his excellent care. The family would also like to thank Brandy and Eddie Woods, Connie Smith, Tim Jackson for their excellent care over the last four years. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Ben Atchley Veterans Home or the U.S Southern Cav veteran’s organization. Family will receive friends Tuesday, January 2nd from 5-7pm with funeral service immediately following at Berry Highland West on Sherrill Blvd. Rev. Rick Carnes officiating.
