Paul Edward Dunn, affectionately known to family and friends as Tiger, passed away peacefully July 21, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was a member of West Hills Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dunn was born on July 17, 1931 in Knoxville, Tennessee to the late Sterling Jerome Dunn and Zula Nickles Dunn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Grigsby and husband Hank, mother and father-in-law Christopher C. Tipton and Ruth P. Tipton. Mr. Dunn was also preceded in death by his beloved daughter Laura Ellen Dunn (his Chickadee) and his faithful black Lab Dexter.
Mr. Dunn is survived by his loving and devoted wife Martha Tipton Dunn. Mr. and Mrs. Dunn would have been married sixty years on August 3, 2018. Mr. Dunn is also survived by his loving children: Alison Dunn Jackson (Howard), Philip Dunn (Laura), Betsy Dunn-Medley (David), Carolyn Dunn (Thomas); grandchildren, Emilee Bowles Jones (Eric), Nicholas Bowles (Britton), Tucker Bowles (Amy), Katie Dunn, Kelsey Dunn, Davis Edward Dunn, Mary Ellen Dunn, and Macie Dunn; and great grandchildren Carson Bowles and Aubree Eleanor Jones. He is also survived by a special nephew Dr. Eric J. Grigsby his wife Dr. Mary Grigsby-Rocca and children.
Mr. Dunn was a proud Combat Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served actively as a tank commander in the Korean War and thereafter in the reserves. He served with the 1st Marine Division and received various awards and citations including the Korean Service medal, and three Bronze Stars, which designated specific combat campaigns.
Mr. Dunn was a graduate of Young High School. He received his Bachelors Degree from MTSU. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from the University Of Tennessee College Of Law in 1961.
Mr. Dunn practiced law in Knoxville for over forty years. He began practicing with renowned criminal defense lawyer Ray H. Jenkins. He remained with the firm Jenkins and Jenkins until 1995. Mr. Dunn was the founding member of the firm Dunn, MacDonald and Coleman established in 1995. He was a member of various bar associations and organizations including the American Board of Trial Advocacy. He was named Distinguished Senior Counsel by the Tennessee Bar Association, and an honorary member of the Winfield Dunn cabinet. Mr. Dunn was licensed to practice law in all state and federal courts in Tennessee. At various times he served as special judge for General Sessions, Juvenile and Chancery Courts.
Paul Edward Dunn was a true southern gentleman in every way. His unwavering faith in God, exceptional love for his wife and children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family and friends, entertaining sense of humor and kind and generous spirit will live on in all of us forever!! We thank him for all of these priceless gifts he gave us throughout his 87 years of living. His life was indeed a life well lived! We were truly blessed by the Good Lord to have had him as husband, father, grandfather and friend. Losing him has been a profound loss to our entire family. We are at peace knowing that he is now in Heaven walking the streets of gold with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his precious daughter Laura Ellen. He will be eternally loved and remembered.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to St. Jude's Research Hospital or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Serving as pallbearers will be Howard Jackson, Thomas Hollis, David Medley, Nicholas Bowles, Tucker
Bowles and Davis Dunn. Honorary Pallbearers will include Earl Layman, Greg Coleman, James MacDonald, Dallas Reynolds, Keith Blue and Eric Jones.
The Dunn family will receive friends Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at West Hills Presbyterian Church, 7600 Bennington Dr. NW, Knoxville, TN, 37909 with a Funeral Service to follow at 7pm, Senior Pastor John E.
