Mary Ann Dempster Klein, age 56, died on August 3, 2017, in Knoxville, TN. Mary Ann was born in Knoxville on July 12, 1961, the daughter of Richard and Emily Dempster, and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in finance. Previously, she was a world class swimmer for the University of North Carolina and the prestigious Nashville Aquatic Club. Mary Ann was placed in both the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the State of Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. For 27 years, she worked as an accountant at her family’s Knoxville business, Dempster Machine Shop, established in 1876. She is survived by her husband, Doug Klein; daughter, Miranda Klein, and stepson, Matthew Klein. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Ross Dempster, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from her late siblings, sister, Emily Hurst, and brothers, Dick, Charles, and Stephen. A Gathering to celebrate Mary Ann’s life will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, August 10th, at Berry Highland West Funeral Home, 9913 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, 37932.
