Herndon, Sue Haynie (Mary Sue), 87, of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 30, 2014. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Henderson State College in Arkansas. She taught high school in Texarkana. She went on to The University of Alabama and pursued her Master’s Degree, but it was interrupted by the death of her mother and marriage to Walter Herndon. After taking time to raise her family , she returned to college at The University of Tennessee and earned her Master’s Degree in Library Sciences and worked as a librarian in Knox County Schools. She was a member of and very involved in Lake Hills Presbyterian Church. She was also very involved in her community and professional activities. Proceeded in death by her parents, William Earl and Lena Haynie; her former husband of 44 years; her grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in Arkansas. Survived by children, Martha, Susan, Stephen and Thomas; two daughters-in-law, Grace and Lora; granddaughter, Kirstin (Derek); and great grandsons, Preston and Liam. Special thanks to caregivers, Ellen Mitchell, Beth Hohe, Jessica Ray, Elaine Cameron, Lisa Meade, Ashley Brenner, Susan Prince and others from Home Instead Senior Care, as well as therapists and nurses from Amedysis, and her hospice care team. Family will receive friends Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church on Maloney Road from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm. Service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. James McTyre officiating. Family and friends will meet Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Woodlawn Cemetery for a 10:00 am graveside service. In lieu of flowers please read a book to a child or make a donation to your local library, her church, or Alzheimer’s Association. If you feel a need to send flowers, please no gladiolas.
