Margie Lee Smith Gross, age 93, of Knoxville, went to her Heavenly Home on January 23, 2018 at NHC Healthcare at Fort Sanders. She was born in Mayfield, KY on June 11, 1924. Preceded in death by husband of 70 years, William Edward “Bill” Gross; parents, Hart Lee Smith and Gladys Nevada Smith; brothers, Forest Smith and Curtis Smith; sisters, Louise Gardner, Imogene Mason, Edith Youngblood, and Virginia Butler. Margie worked in a clothing factory and later as an inspector in an aircraft factory where B-29 bombers were made during WWII. She met Bill during this time in Detroit. They married on May 3, 1945 and soon moved to Oak Ridge, TN. Margie got her GED and then graduated from the Tennessee School of Beauty. Years later she got an LPN degree. For years, Margie’s hobby was contesting and she won many prizes. Margie was very competitive and loved playing cards and games with family and friends. She loved the Lord Jesus and was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church. Margie leaves behind two sons, Dwayne Gross and wife Charlene, Julian “Tony” Gross and wife Karen. She had three grandchildren, Kevin Gross and wife Jackie, Ashley Bruce and husband Wes, and Scott Gross. She had eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews mostly in the Mayfield, KY area. The family has much gratitude for the staff of NHC Fort Sanders for their compassionate care. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 12 noon – 2 pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home, 2300 Adair Dr. The funeral will follow with Pastor Barry Clanton officiating.
