

Virginia Lucile Smith Caldwell was born on Dec. 29, 1932, the youngest of six children born to Rufus H. Smith, Sr., and Rene Smith. Lucy lived in Knoxville most of her life and entered in the automobile industry at a young age where she met G. Earl Caldwell. They married in 1952 and soon moved to Atlanta, Ga. to pursue their careers. There, Lucy served as operations manager for a large fleet leasing company. After retirement, Lucy used her creative side to make beautiful leather goods, hats, and clothing. Along with their best friends, Herbert and Mia Bass, Lucy and Earl traveled to shows across the country displaying and selling the goods that Lucy created. Around 1991 Lucy and Earl moved back to Knoxville where they enjoyed an active life. Lucy loved her church and friends and continued to create her unique pieces that were displayed in homes and given to relatives. She loved sewing at Helping Hands, and she could always be found at LLL telling a funny story or laughing with her friends. She was a devoted wife, sister, cousin, always cooking and delivering food to those that needed it. She was an amazing cook and baker. Lucy was a unique personality and always the life of the any party. She was loved and enjoyed by family and friends. Lucy went home to be with her Lord and Savior on March 29,2025. She is at peace with so many that loved her.
Preceded in death by husband G. Earl Caldwell, parents, Rufus H. Smith Sr. & Rene Smith, Sisters, Bonnie Vance, Catherine S. May. Brothers, Kenneth Smith, Rufus H. Smith Jr., and Clarence Smith. A nephew Gary Smith and great-niece Rona Lynn.
Left here to miss her are sister-in-law, Tommie M. Smith, cousins Sue and Carolyn Wilson, Nieces Theresa M Phillips (Doug), Kyleleen Casteel, Traci Smith (Lynna), Jeanette Lynn. Nephews Rocky Smith (Mary), Tom Smith (Beverly) and Dan Vance. Along with a host of great nieces, nephews, and friends.
Special friends and caregivers Mandy Rogers, Celeste Powers, Margaret Blackwell, Brenda Green, Carmien Wilson, and Donna Boling. Lucy loved each one of these fine ladies and they took such good care of her.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday, April 1,2025 at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian. Visitation is at 11-1 with the service to follow at 1. Family and friends will meet at Highland Memorial Cemetery for the burial at 3. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Helping Hands or Kitchen Committee. Pallbearers are Doug Phillips, Sterling Phillips, Lukas Phillips, Rocky Smith, Tom Smith, and Sean Sanderson.
