Les Smalley, 88 passed away on June 18, 2015 after a long illness. He was born on February 4, 1927 in Washington, DC. Les graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. and served in the U.S. Army as trumpet player in the 267th AGF band. The family moved to Knoxville in 1960, where Les had a long career with the City of Knoxville and the Knoxville Utilities Board until his retirement in 1997. He was involved in the Kiwanis Club, was a volunteer at The Refuge in downtown Knoxville, and was a member of the Sunday School Hour. After retiring he enjoyed traveling, playing tennis, playing his trumpet and watching his grandchildren play sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Ivan Smalley and Minnie Carr Smalley. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne McKeown Smalley; daughters, Carol Smalley Tucker (Mark), Donna Leggett (Rich), and Lynn Smalley; son, Robert Smalley (Margaret); grandchildren, Kevin and Katherine Tucker, Aimee MacIlveen (Scot), Elizabeth Johnson (Michael), Lisa Crawley, Amanda Coward (Clay),and Matthew Smalley; and three great grandchildren. Our family wishes to thank the special staff at Tennova Residential Hospice. We will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with the Funeral Service at 1:00 pm at Berry Highland Memorial, 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919.
