John Robert Motz, known as Bob to his family and friends, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2016 at the age of 93. He was born on September 3, 1923 in Hagerstown, Maryland, the second child of John Henry and Florence Virgina Motz. A graduate of Tressler High School in Loysville, Pennsylvania. Bob married the love of his life Ruth Romaine Cope on March 25, 1944 in Cherry Point, North Carolina, where Bob was stationed while serving with the United States Marine Corps. A member of Faith Lutheran Church, he was a devoted family man and avid tennis player, golfer, and bridge player. Bob began his business career at Pangborn Corporation in Hagerstown, Maryland following his graduation from high school. He worked for the same company for 49 years although the name of the company changed no less than four times during his career. He was a Boy Scoutmaster of Troop 61 in Hagerstown for 11 years and had a profound effect on many young lives teaching boys the value of hard work and the virtue of a quest for knowledge, while at the same time making it fun. He is survived by his wife Ruthie and his children John Robert Motz Jr. and his wife Sharon of Vienna, Virginia, Gary Paul Motz and his wife Ann, and James Allen Motz and his wife Cindy, both of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as grandchildren John, Kris, Trevor, Brad, Bryan, and Adam along with great-grandchildren Tristan, Noah, Chase, Riley, and Elizabeth. He is preceded in death by his son Thomas Clark Motz and great grandsons Carter and Jonah. Family will receive friends Wednesday, November 16, from 11:30 AM – Noon at Berry Highland West, and immediately proceed to the VA Cemetery on Gov. John Sevier Hwy for a 1:30 PM Graveside Service.
