John Corum Leatherwood Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 10, 2021 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born on December 11, 1940 in Knoxville to John and Juanita Leatherwood.
John was raised in Knoxville where he attended Bearden High School, played sports and worked at Gateway Sporting Goods, the family business. John later served in the Army. He worked at Y12 for over forty years and was a proud member of Teamsters Local 519 where he served as a union representative. He enjoyed working for many years with his family and friends at the old Atomic Motor Speedway in Roane County and Smoky Mountain Speedway in Blount County where he was a long time track official.
He is predeceased by his wife of over fifty years, Cynthia Linginfelter Leatherwood who passed away on January 18, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is also predeceased by his parents.
John is survived by his three children; son John Corum Leatherwood III (Bridget) of Knoxville and daughters Tanza Leatherwood of Knoxville and Trista Wearing (Brian) of Kennesaw, Georgia. He greatly loved his eight grandchildren; John, Evan, Bryce, Bailee, Ethan, Brooklyn, Kellsie and William as well as his siblings Barry Leatherwood and Rebecca Wilson. John cherished his nieces, nephews and friends. John loved his “adopted” daughters, Heather Bingham, Lisa Jarrell and Katrina Slover. The family wishes to thank his friends Ainsley and Sylvia who lovingly provided care for John in his latter years.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery located at 5315 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. The service will be live-streamed on the Berry Highland Memorial Facebook page at “Highland Memorial Park Funerals and Cremations”.
