Gene Woodward Money, age 93, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023. He was born in Knoxville, TN. Gene was a 1947 graduate of Knoxville High School before enlisting in the Army in the diision of Counter Intelligence Corp, stationed in Japan. After serving his country for two years, he returned home to his wife and his first son.
Gene made a career in agricultural feed and supplements, employed by Security Feeds, ConAgra, and Music City Supplements. He kept very busy after retirement by volunteering his time to Habitat for Humanity as board Vice-president helping build 27 houses during his tenure and starting a Habitat Restore in McMinnville.
Gene was very active in his church, both in Knoxville at Fairview United Methodist Church and in McMinnville at First United Methodist Church. He served as a lay leader and taught Sunday school classes for many, many years. A member of the Good Neighbors food distribution, a faithful choir member and director, and loved helping make candy apples at Fairview UMC during the fair.
Gene was a very active sportsman, coaching and playing baseball, basketball, tennis and bowling. He won numerous tennis tournaments through the years and collected a shelf full of bowling trophies on teams in Knoxville and McMinnville with his wife, Virginia. Gene loved watching his UT Vols and Atlanta Braves. He also was an avid hiker as a member of the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club and loved floating and fishing the Collins River when he lived in McMinnville.
Gene loved writing short stories and poetry, having several published in his own books and in various articles. He also enjoyed corresponding with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. After contracting Parkinson’s Disease, he found that it was therapeutic to draw portraits on the backs of sturdy paper plates. His son, Dale, helped him to display them at the Fountain City Library as an inspiration to others.
Gene led his family every October in carrying on a one hundred year old tradition of making apple butter in copper kettles over a fire. This year, we will celebrate his life and legacy when we gather. Gene would say that his greatest accomplishment was raising three children along with the love of his life, and leading them to know the Lord Jesus as their Savior and watching each one carry that faith to their family and their church.
Gene was the son of the late Fred and Ruth Money. He was recently preceded in death by his sister, Joanne Bolden (husband, Tom) of Tullahoma, TN and his brother, Jack Money (wife, Kaye) of Defiance, OH. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Virginia Murphy Money; two sons and their wives, Douglas and Terri (Kirkham) Money, Dale and Carol (Vesser) Money, and his daughter, Donna Money. Gene was very proud of their four grandchildren and their spouses, twelve great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.
Family and friends will meet at Lynnhurst Cemetery for the 11:00 A.M. Committal Service on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Rev. John Jackson will officiate.
