Gary Louis Hines, aged 77, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the city where he was born on January 7, 1947. A devoted family man, Gary is survived by his loving wife, Janice Seymour Hines, whom he married after graduating from Powell High School in 1966. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage together.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, B.L. and Juanita Houser Hines and his grandson, Zachary Ammons. He leaves behind his children, Ellen Silver (Barry), Sherry Ammons (Joel) and Randy Hines (Kassidy); grandchildren, Nathan, Michael and Daniel Silver, Nick and Katelyn Ammons, Keller and Kerrigan Hines and brother, Barry Hines.
Gary was the founder and operator of Hines Fine Soils, where he utilized his early taught work ethic and skills in heavy equipment to visualize and complete building sites. Not only did he build his own home, but he also helped construct homes for each of his children. An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, boating and traveling with family and friends. His most cherished spot was Hawaii, where he was blessed to visit more than 30 times. His favorite activity, however, was working, whether it was on a job site or at home, where his BBQ ribs were legendary among those who got to try them. Gary was a member of First Baptist Church in Powell.
Gary's life was marked by dedication to his family, his business acumen and his generosity in sharing his skills and knowledge. Everything Gary did, he did with all his might, and inspired others to do likewise. His legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched and the community he helped build.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and CNA's at Covenant Hospice and special care givers, Nene and Corey.
Gary will be lying in state at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home, Monday, July 22, 2024 from 9am to 2pm with a graveside service to follow at 3pm at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Tim McGhee officiating.
