Varner, Evelyn, age 92, of Knoxville, passed away Monday May 23, 2011 at Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic and previously Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. In her youth she was an avid 4-H Club member and made an award winning Lady Baltimore Cake. She worked as a welder during WW II in the shipyards in California to help the war effort. At age 61 she enrolled in Ft. Sanders School of Nursing and graduated with honors. She worked at Ft. Sanders hospital as an RN until age 72. Preceded in death by parents, Jesse and Clara South; husband, William Gormley and Thomas Varner; 3 sisters, and 3 brothers.
Survived by daughter, Patricia E. Johnson; sons, William R. Gormley, and Robert B. Gormley and wife, Tracy; Grandchildren, Tara Burkey, Nichole Kirby, Patrick Johnson and wife, Meaghan, Jeremy Gormley and wife, Tina, Kimberly Neuenschwander and husband, Ethan; 10 great grandchildren; twin brothers, Dean South and wife, Marge, Don South and wife, Kathy; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm Wednesday with a Rosary to follow at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Monsignor Xavier Mankel officiating. Interment will follow in Lynnhurst Cemetery.
