Dennis Charles Overton was a man who never met a stranger, that was true in this life and will likely be true in the next. At 69 years of age, he passed peacefully on from this realm after a battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's on June 12th, 2022. A lover of baseball, Atlanta Braves in particular, oldies music, Friday afternoon movies with his wife and kids, and fellowship with his bible study groups. Dennis lived his life to the fullest and had fun every step of the way. Born in Newport, TN on September 28, 1952, his work ethic became apparent at a young age. At just 14, he obtained his driver's license to help his mother raise his two younger siblings after his oldest brother and father passed away. He truly became the man of the house, working his way through college and supporting his family back home. He loved to tell of his many jobs growing up, from cutting cabbage at Stokely Van Camp to washing UPS trucks during college, he never shied away from hard work. Dennis graduated from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and became a Certified Public Accountant. With rigorous dedication and ambition, he opened his own CPA firm that bore his name: Dennis C. Overton, CPA. He saw great success in serving many well know clients in the Knoxville area due to his total dedication to his work that formed many lifelong friends. Dennis married his high school sweetheart; Melanie and they would have been married for 49 years in July. Dennis and Melanie have two children, a son, Jonathan and a daughter, Ashley, born 2 years and 361 days apart in December of 1980 and 1983 respectively. He saw a lot of personal and professional success in his life but one of his most cherished relationships was with Jesus, a relationship that grew strong and true later in his life and brought him closer to his wife, family, friends, and community. He served on the boards of FCA and KICKO to enrich the lives of young people through the word of Jesus. The community loved him too, not one dinner out in Knoxville went by without someone coming by the table to greet Dennis with a handshake and a hug, followed always by a laugh, then he would proceed to greet others on the way out of the door. He made everyone he spoke to feel like his best friend and to him, they all were. His last few years were difficult as he lost his memories, his recognition of others and his physical strength but now, in Heaven, he has all of it back and then some. If you knew him, he loved you, and he's looking down at you now, smiling.
He is survived by his wife, Melanie Overton, son Jonathan, and daughter Ashley. He is also survived by brother, David Overton, former wife, Jody and their children Cameron and Samantha Overton, along with Cameron's wife Sarah, their daughter Kennedi and Samantha's son, Caleb, his brother-in-law Carol Proffitt, nephew Aaron Proffitt, his wife, Melissa and their daughters Reece, Kaylyn and Payton, whom he loved as if they were his own and truly cherished his time with them. He is preceded in death by father Sam, mother Bobbie, brothers Sammy and Larry, father and mother-in-law, Ruel and Wymalene Gray, and sisters-in-law Ruelena "Nene" and Henrietta.
Dennis's service will be conducted by Rev. Scott Jackson at the Chapel of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at 11:00am, visitation to follow. Private burial will be at 3:00pm at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
Dennis was never shy in asking for donations to help the youth of Knoxville, in fact he would tell you to give till it hurt, especially if he knew you had it to give, which he usually did since he did your taxes.
