Clifton Paul Stewart, born on March 26, 1942, in Jonesville, Virginia, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 22, 2024, in his favorite chair at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending his formative years with his siblings at the Church of God Orphanage in Sevierville, Tennessee, Paul moved north to Ohio at age sixteen. There, he met his wife of 64 years, Margarett Clegg Stewart, and they raised their two children, Suzie Stewart Hazelwood and Brett Stewart, in Lewisburg, Ohio. Paul and Margarett followed their children back to Tennessee, where they spent much time as doting grandparents and great-grandparents.
Paul loved studying history, spending time outside, and was a talented carpenter who created beautiful pieces of furniture that are treasured by friends and family. He attended church at Rocky Hill Baptist.
Paul was preceded in death by granddaughter, Jessie Hazelwood; parents, Clifton and Eliza Jane Campbell Stewart; siblings, Sylva June Roop, Margaret Louise Miles and Charles Stewart; and best friend, Howard Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Margarett Stewart; children, Suzie Stewart Hazelwood and Brett Stewart (Lisa); grandchildren, Ashley Farrington (Jeffrey), Asa Hazelwood (Katie), and Caity Turpin (Chris); great-grandchildren, Jase Farrington, Adalyn Farrington, Georgina Hazelwood, Avery Turpin, and Emerson Turpin; siblings, Ora Ruth Runner (Tom), and Burley Herman Stewart (Debbie); brother-in-law, Jess Roop; and dear friends, Dr. Lee Toney, Lloyd Aldridge, and Pastor Scott Whaley.
Receiving of friends will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 at Rocky Hill Baptist Church, 7409 S. Northshore Drive, at 1pm with a funeral service to follow at 2pm. A graveside service will be held in the Chapel Mausoleum at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
