After attending Hiawassee College and a Knoxville Business School she worked as a secretary at Tennessee Coach Co., in Knoxville where she met her husband of 35 years, James O. North. She later worked at Miller’s (Dillard’s) department store and retired in 1991.
Catherine enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, canning, sewing and needlework. She enjoyed tennis and bowling. She also participated women’s basketball in high school and the mid-1940s Knoxville city leagues. She gave her time and effort as a Boy Scout Den Mother and Brownie Girl Scout Leader. She was a good friend and helpful to friends and neighbors. Catherine was a member of Concord United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Organization and the Altar Guild.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James O. North Sr., sister, Margaret Evans and brother, Sam Johnson and many friends.
Catherine is survived by son and daughter-in law Jim and Tracy North of Hampton Georgia, daughter and son-in-law Susan and Steve Lewis of Knoxville, Grandchildren Corey North, Tim Lewis, Stefanie (Tyler) Smith and Jordan (Dylan) Thompkins and 2 great-grandchildren, in addition to several nieces and nephews.
Her family was her life that she nourished and treasured. She was a loving and devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was much loved and cherished by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.
The family also wishes to express special thanks to Autumn Care West and Smoky Mountain Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Catherine. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery on Wednesday, January 13, Reverend Mike Stallings officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to CADES (Concord Adult Day Enrichment Services) or the Community Garden of Concord United Methodist Church 11020 Roane Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37934.
